Another Yoshi Revealed in Mario Tennis Open

My words, I should have gotten this out as soon as it was announced. Lost track of time (about 12 hours) but it’s going up! Pink Yoshi QR code for all, as long as you have Mario Tennis Open. Star Wars, Spike TV and E3

So apparently LucasArts has been developing a new “top-secret project” (I’m personally hoping for Battlefront 3). In order to get everyone ready for E3 Spike TV will be debuting footage of the game during a special “E3 All Access Live” on GTTV Thursday May 31.

Following this, on June 4 (one day before E3 officially kicks off), E3 All Access Live will premiere the first live action demo starting at 10pm Eastern/7pm Pacific. For the segment GTTV’s host Geoff Keighley traveled to San Francisco to the LucasArts studio where he tweeted:

“Today we filmed a huge top secret game reveal for our E3 coverage. Can’t wait to share it with you - no one will see this coming”

Another comment from Geoff on the game:

“I can’t wait to introduce our viewers to this game and show off the footage that left my jaw on the floor when I first saw it.”

Mario Tennis Open QR Codes, Available For… Not All

In a twist I personally did not know, it seems that QR codes, which Nintendo is using to handle extra characters and such for MTO, can actually be region-locked. I thought it was too fishy when I first heard they were going the QR route for specific locations on the globe. Someone can just grab and copy the code online, I thought. Nope! Sorry for those (including me) that thought it could be easier.

As far as North America goes, here are Red Yoshi and Blue Yoshi (a facebook poll, apparently). I found out about this from the Swap Note app on my 3DS, but (like I said) someone’s already put it up for those without Nintendo Club accounts: Yoshi outfit.

For you UKers, a Black Yoshi distribution is in the works for the 25th and 26th (aka like, now). Check the link to see if any of the Asda stores that will have the codes are near you! Sadly, like the other NA codes, the Black Yoshi code is region-locked. Australians also have a special on both Black AND White Yoshi.

The official Nintendo site also hints at Pink Yoshi to be found on a game site. The obvious choice it blurts out doesn’t seem to have any sort of code at the moment. As soon as the code goes out, it’ll go here.

EDIT: Just in case anyone glosses over how to get the codes.

On the Select File screen
Press up on the D-Pad and press Start
Repeat until you get what you want

Here’s something you don’t hear often- Exclusive Free DLC For Tekken Tag Tournament 2!

NAMCO BANDAI has announced that depending on where you preorder TTT2 from, you could recieve certain DLC characters for free. If you preorder through Amazon.com or Best Buy, you will be able to download Michelle Chang and Angel. If you preorder through GameStop, you’ll have access to Chang and Angel, plus the characters Kunimitsu and Ancient Ogre.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be available starting September 11th on both 360 and PS3 in North America and September 14th in Europe.

Review: Cloudberry Kingdom beta

Last week a couple of us were able to test out this wonderful game. Nathan’s comments will be labeled with an N and Daniel’s will be marked with a D.

N: Although the version of the game I was able to play did not include the level-building AI, it still did incorporate an insane number of platforming levels for all the difficulties. Pwnee Studios claimed that the game would be the most difficult platformer ever, while simultaneously saying it was also one of the most accessible platformers ever because of the AI builder. Naturally, being the most fun platformer ever goes alongside those statements, and Pwnee have delivered the best platformer I may have ever touched.

At first, the physics are a little wonky and take some time to get used to, especially since none of the different heros you can pick from have any distinguishable difference. Since this is the beta, only one type of physics can be chosen, but you can still change the appearance of your hero. Take a look at the screenshots, because yes, it does get weird. The one above is on one of the easier settings and features an odd looking headed hero I initially played as.

The first notable differences in the levels is the theme. Each level is actually broken up by several sublevels, all categorized by a theme as you progress, so its technically more “worlds” that are split up by “levels”. One of the more frustrating features is that even though the beta is from Steam, the controls are put down for the 360 version, which led me to figuring out how to control my character by myself. While this took a little bit of getting used to, especially with the adaptation to the physics engine, it did pay off and became more fun the more I played.

Level design goes from being very simple yet challenging to absolutely insane. Luckily, the game includes a special replay mode where it actually shows you how to “beat” the level. On the harder difficulties, though, still attempting to perform a perfect run seems near impossible and still takes a long time to do, but the ultimate payoff leaves you feeling exhilarated. Attempting to go through the confusing levels takes a lot of time and effort, even knowing and seeing the answer to the puzzle.

Each level has its own sort of mini-story, but it’s ultimately irrelevant and merely just for fun, similar to most other platformers that are out there. The challenge factor reminds me a lot of Rayman Origins, but there’s apparently some type of lives system in play? I never had to use any, but I did see an occasional “HERO X5” message when I beat a level, or perhaps it was some type of extra score. This is my only real criticism of the game if this is true, because there is absolutely no need for a lives system- especially on the harder difficulties, where just getting through on the edge of your skin is already a guarantee.

Cloudberry Kingdom had me addicted for quite awhile and it’s undoubtedly better than almost any other platformer I’ve ever played except perhaps Rayman Origins, which I readily compare it to as a more indie equivalent and perhaps even more challenging. Adjust the difficulty to your comfort setting, or challenge yourself relentlessly, since the game will easily adjust to both those standards. Each world will alter its level design to fit your specific level of challenge, and each is readily defeatable if you’re willingly to put in the time and effort to learn the nuances of the level. Easily one of the best games I’ve ever played!

D: Every once and a while a game comes along and the gameplay is perfect to me. The perfect blend of fun and challenge, with great music and art style, and flawless programming. Cloudberry Kingdom is almost that game. The only flaw I saw was there was random slow downs, but it was easily fixed by changing the background (Pressing 0/zero) and changing it back. Since it’s in beta though, I won’t judge it harshly on that.

The art style is nothing unique but it works very well with this game because you never lose where you are on the screen. With insane platformers like I Wanna Be The Guy, it’s easy to lose your character in the chaos.

I really enjoyed the music too. It reminded me a little of Earthworm Jim, which is one of my favorite games.

Something really unique about this game though, and really impresses me is, the randomly generated levels and the 4 player local multiplayer. I believe if they can add in internet multiplayer, this game could be a huge success.

Another thing I really enjoy is the instant respawn and the replay you can watch at the end of each level. It reminds me a lot of Super Meat Boy, another favorite of mine. If I had to rate this game as-is, I’d give it an 8/10.

This is a game I really hope becomes successful because of all the work that’s gone into it and the amount of fun I had testing it out. I recommend anyone that likes platformers to check it out, and if you don’t like platformers, you should check it out anyway. Go over to their Kickstarter and donate to get into the beta!

Microsoft Faces Potential US Ban Of XBox 360 Sales

If you’re unfamiliar with the lawsuit that Motorola has against Microsoft that has been brewing since 2010, here’s a quick refresher:

The dispute dates back a few years, and centres around allegations that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 infringes upon five patents held by Motorola, mostly related to video codecs.

The thing is, International Trade Commission judge David Shaw has spoken out against Microsoft, stating that he believes Microsoft should be banned from importing new XBox 360 consoles (they’re manufactured in China) and should also be prevented from selling new consoles in the United States. He has also stated Microsoft should also pay Motorola 7% of the value of all the remaining unsold consoles in the country.

If the ITC commissioners agree with Shaw, then Microsoft will be prevented from selling any new 4GB and 250GB consoles in the US. It is unknown if the 320GB new, pre-owned, or refurbished consoles will be affected or if they will be allowed sale if this is the case. The situation is serious enough that if the dispute is found in favor of Motorola, the case will end up on President Obama’s table, where he’ll have 60 days to review the findings.
