Video Game Nostalgia

Good news, everybody: Duolingo is going to open to the public on June 19th. That’s very exciting news in itself, but the best part is it’s completely free.

Duolingo is a website dedicated to teaching the Internet-using public a new language or two, or three. Currently with programs for Spanish, French, and German, Duolingo teaches users the language of their choice at a comfortable pace through text-translation and simple lessons.

Now you may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with videogames? For one, Duolingo motivates users to continue with their lessons through a leveling system. When you proceed through more lessons, you gain more skill points, and your level increases as a result. However, Duolingo also aims to meet one very admirable goal. Founder Luis von Ahn created the website not only to teach people languages at no cost, but to have those very same people translate the entire web.

Go check it out here! Sign ups for private beta access are still available, but don’t fret if you don’t get in - Duolingo will be accessible to everybody in just four days.
